Urban, Edgy Spring

There are so many things that I admire about my best friend: her focus & determination, the inner coolness that she exudes & her sense of adventure, just to name a few. We are alike in many ways, but our sense of style is one of our differences.

She is "edgy" & "urban" to my "girly" & "preppy". Basically, she is a bad ass. So this is a little spring ensemble that I've thrown together in honor of her.

Motivation Monday

I must admit, it was hard to drag myself back into the office after the gorgeous weather that we've had over the past couple of days, but here I am.

This weekend I made a deal with myself. I decided to use a trick that I learned from the very first therapist I ever visited (which was back in college): Anytime my mind wonders to worry or negative thoughts, I visualize a STOP sign in my mind. It's so easy to use precious energy going over & over a situation in your mind, or envisioning a conversation that you hope to have, but it is such a waste of the current moment (not to mention our energy).

This infographic is the perfect reminder to start off the week.

Have a good one!

Chambray + Denim

Happy Sunday! I've been loving the double denim look lately, so I thought I would share one of my takes on the look. There are so many ways that you can do it, but this is one of my favorites - leopard + lots of color!

Fort Collins - Four Months In

As of tomorrow, it has been four months to the day since we moved and I have an apology to make, Fort Collins. I have been a bit grumpy. Apparently I am the only person that didn't take this whole "seven months of winter" thing seriously. Either that or I thought I could hack it.

And the verdict is still out. Can I endure seven months of winter for five glorious months of a spring/summer/fall combo? Only time will tell. But from here on, I pledge to get over it - as best I can. That means no more complaining when I feel a tad bit too chilly.

Also, I understand that it is not just the weather here, but pretty much everywhere that has been a little cold for an unseasonably long time, so that makes it a bit easier, knowing that the majority of the country is going through the same sort of thing.

It's just that I, like most others, am ready to enjoy all of the things that spring brings. And I've never quite felt the urge to be outdoors like I do here. There is so many spring time things that I want to begin doing: Hiking, biking, running outside, picnics, all sorts of patio drinking, OPEN TOED SHOES, to name a few.

Until I am enjoying those above mentioned activities, here are some photos from the last couple of months in Fort Collins.

Our April blizzard. No filter.

Another April snow scene outside of the gym.

Here's hoping we don't see this again until post-summer!

Oh La La.

I am so happy.

I made my first inspiration board!

I've had the Polyvore app forever & loved repinning other's Polyvore creations on Pinterest, but never put two & two together to make my own. I tend to make things more complicated than they really are sometimes. : )

So here you have it, a spring look I'm dyng to wear. Anyone else LOVING the sweater trend that's going on right now? I hear Old Navy had some good, inexpensive ones, if you're looking for a budget find.

"Our Song"

*Note to the reader: This post is a tad bit sappy. Read with caution.

Do you and your partner have a song that you identify as "yours?" It's a silly trend that started (for me) way back in middle school, but sort of stuck.

The other evening while we were cooking dinner we had the Pandora blasting, as usual and "our song" came on. It wasn't the song that we danced to at our reception or even one that was being sung during our ceremony, it was one that we had chosen on a desserted dirt road, late one Friday night in high school.

Side note - Mom, yes, that was probably one of the nights I came home pasted my curfew. But it all worked out, right?

When "our song" came on the other night I had to smile a little because I realized that the words were so so much truer today than they were back then. And that, my friends, is a sweet feeling.

It's Your Love (by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill)

Dancing in the dark

Middle of the night
Taking your heart
Holding it tight
Emotional touch
Touching my skin
Askin' you to do
What you've been doing
All over again
Oh, it's a beautiful thing
Don't think I can keep it all in
I've just gotta let you know
What it is that won't let me go

It's your love
Just does something to me
Sends a spark right through me
I can't get enough
And if you wonder
'Bout the spell I'm under
It's your love

Better than I was
More than I am
All of that happened
By taking your hand
Who I am now
Is who I've wanted to be
Now that we're together
Stronger than ever, happy and free
Oh, it's a beautiful thing
Don't think I can keep it all in
And if you ask me why I'll change
All I gotta do is say your sweet name

It's your love
Just does something to me
Sends a shock right through me
Can't get enough
And if you wonder
'Bout the spell I'm under
It's your love

Friday Favorites

It's the weekend again! I don't know about you, but my favorite weekends are the ones that are open, not overly booked. Sure, it's fun to have a lot going on, but it's also fun to be able to decide what you're going to do that day based on your mood.

This weekend is one of those weekends for us - the only thing on our agenda, besides a work out on Saturday & church on Sunday, is a movie with friends on Saturday evening. I'm finally going to see Oz, which as Kansas girl, is a must.

Happy Weekend!

I'm loving chambray on denim & the pops of color scream, "SPRING!" Check back for my take on this look next week.

A flirty spring print.

So much of our twenties is spent figuring out who we are & what we want to do with this life that we've been given. It's been a topic that, along with this quote, has been on my mind a lot lately.

With all of the snow we've been getting this week, I've been dreaming of a beach vacation!

Mood Board! I'm going to teach myself how to make these because I just love looking at them & want them on my blog. This one is borrowed from one of my favorite graphic designers, Ashley, who owns Ashley Ella Design. Ashley is, incidentally, currently on a beach vacation. And we are all jealous of her.

If anyone has any mood board tips or tricks, please hit me up!!

My Girlfriends

I need to take a moment to brag. I have some of the greatest girlfriends in the world.

If you can say the same for yourself, you are one lucky lady.

In my opinion, there are a handful of components that make up a good friendship between two women.

1. Being able to laugh together.

And not just the chuckling kind of laugh. I mean the full-fledged, crying & can't breathe kind of laughter. Love that.

2. Being able to let your TRUE self show. Not just your best self, no, I mean your TRUE self.

This is a big one. It's hard for us to let others inside & see the parts of ourselves that we don't like as much, or that we are working on. But I think it's so important for our friends to know our struggles just as well as our triumphs.

Which brings me to #3...

3. Being there for each other in for good times & bad. This, I believe is where a true test comes in & friendships are made stronger or broken.

Trust me, you'll know who your "real" friends are when you are struggling with an issue or in the midst of a personal mess. And I hate the term "real friends", but there is nothing else better fitting. During these times of trouble is when we need our friends the most. Good girlfriends can come in and help you pull yourself out. And if you haven't already, you WILL return the favor someday, because everyone goes through things.

4. Being able to trust each other.

Sharing your thoughts & feelings with your girlfriends is an invaluable part of life. We just "get" each other better than our partners can sometimes, and it's important to be understood. What's even better is knowing that you can share details of your life & they will stay safe with a good girlfriend. You know they won't gossip, talk behind your back or use the information you tell them against you.

5. Being able to support & inspire each other to become better.

Some of my greatest inspiration comes from my girlfriends. When I am in need of a dose of life motivation - for whatever may be going on in my life, whether it being losing weight or taking a leap in my career, I love being able to reach out to my girlfriends to help set me on the right track. They know me, and they love me, so when they offer their opinion or advice, I know it's coming from the right place. They are such amazing women that I aspire to be like each of them in one way or another.

If you have girlfriends like these, cherish them & your friendship, because what would life be like without  our friends?

Boston Marathon Tragedy - How We Can Help

Yesterday's tragedy is weighing heavy on all American (and beyond) hearts today. We have questions:

How could this happen at a race?
Is no where safe anymore?
Who would do this?

While we don't have answers yet, we can certainly pray for comfort for the vicitms, wounded survivors and emotionally-scarred bystanders, as well as asking for wisdom for the volunteers and medical staff still trying to save lives.

In addition to prayer, here are a few more ways that we can help from afar:

1. Donate blood to the Red Cross.

Thankfully, there is currently enough blood at this time, but you can continually check back on their Twitter page: @RedCross

2. Donate to the Salvation Army's efforts.

The organization is currently providing food and counseling to first responders in Boston.

"One of the bombs was reportedly detonated near a VIP area for families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT." - Jonathan Harris of Participant Media

4. Wear a race shirt today.

Although this will not physically help the victims, we can show our support through this simple act.

5. Don't stop running. In fact, sign up for your next race.

One of my very oldest friends brought a tear to my eye last night as I was scanning Twitter. Her tweet was this, "I'd like to think my motivation to run the most I've ever ran tonight came from honoring the victims. ".

We had already signed up to run the BoulderBoulder in May, but now we're doing it for Boston.

During this time of tradegy, I believe that it is just as important to focus on the good that comes from the bad, as it is to mourn for those whose lives are lost or forever changed.

Well said, Mr. Rogers. Well said.

Motivation Monday

Who doesn't love a good mantra?  Especially one from the lips of, none other than, Coco Chanel. This one is true for everyone, not just the girls.

You can be whoever you want to be. If you're not there now, start working towards that person. Take baby steps & celebrate victories. It's never too late to change.

Is there something that you've always wanted to do, but have never taken the plunge? If you did take a chance and it worked out, would you be proud of who you are? And if it didn't work out, what's the worst that could happen?

I've always loved writing. A couple of years ago I decided to start a blog, and although it took me awhile to get my idea off the ground (+ two blog names & multiple platforms later), here I am. I have big hopes & dreams for my little virtual space. Some day those seem so far away, but then I will hear from a friend or acquaintance, telling me that they love reading my posts & that makes it all worthwhile to me.

So on this April Monday, I hope you think about who & what you want to be - then go be it!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!

This is another new post series for me. One of my favorite blogs, Cupcakes and Cashmere, is the inspiration behind it - I love reading her Five Things posts on Fridays. Read her last one here.

Tonight we're having dinner down in Denver at Tom's Urban 24 in Larimer Square with our friends, Erin & Stefan, before going to see Natasha Leggero at Comedy Works. The rest of the weekend is pretty open, besides a baby shower on Sunday - sounds like a good to me!

Here are five of my favorite things this week.

Because I'm DESPERATE for it.

This movie. We stayed up late to watch it on Wednesday night & although it's not a blockbuster, both Cory & I really enjoyed it. And honestly, it made me want to listen to opera.

And on that note, here is a soulful playlist for cooking - something we've been getting into this year.

In fact, I think I will try my hand at this spinach queso this weekend!

Last, but not least, the prayer that has been going through my head this week. Beautiful words.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Birthday Doings

A little list of birthday blessings I received on Tuesday:

Waking up to a bed filled with two sleepy fur babies & an unconscious husband.

Rolling out of bed to find flowers, a sweet card & previously mentioned husband making omelets and english muffins for breakfast.

FaceTiming with my sweet sister & Baby Briggs + Snap Chatting w/Alex & Jayde, who is pictured below.

Listening to good music.

Sweating it out at the gym. Let's not talk about the snow.

Lunching on homemade broccoli cheddar soup (Panera-style) & grilled cheese. We found the soup recipe at Peas and Crayons.

Shopping at one of my favorite stores.

Trying out a new (to us) bar for Happy Hour called Lucious Nectar.

Sipping on martinis at Elliot's with Cory & Rachel.

Enjoying sushi, sake and good conversation at Suehiro.
